Kicking Sugar and the Food Lover's Cleanse
This holiday season I made enough fudge to share with most of my neighbors, three batches of palm sized sugar cookies (those didn't leave the house) and tried enough bottles of wine from Club W to earn me 1,000 JetBlue travel points. Things got real. Calorie intake was immeasurable. I mean, no biggie, because everything you eat between November and January is calorie free, right?
When the first of the year finally rolled around I was feeling sluggish, unhealthy and ready to kick this new sugar habit. The thing is, I've done the 'detox', I've tried the 'cleanse', I've been a 'clean-eater' and felt pretty uninspired to revisit any of it. I wanted to layer some flavors, try my hand at some new recipes, explore ingredients that I didn't know how to pronounce yet and get back into a healthier eating routine. That's when I got the #bacleanse announcement email.
Some initial thoughts: WOW. Look at these recipes. UNREAL. This is a cleanse? Who is Sara Dickerman? WHAT IS THIS. Shopping lists? PDF menus? Bon Appetit is SETTING ME UP. How have I never seen this!? WOW.
Basically, Bon Appetit has curated a bunch of amazing recipes that are call for fresh, healthy whole-foods. This year's cleanse included a two-week eating plan, shopping lists and google calendar events that you can plug right into iCal, that part pretty much guaranteed I wouldn't forget to eat.
My favorite part about the cleanse was breakfast. I am usually a - two (or three) cups of coffee, dig into work, forget to eat until 11:00am - kinda gal. During the cleanse, I didn't forget breakfast ONCE. These recipes were exciting, healthy and delicious and OMG I was going to eat them.
Not only did this cleanse practically cure me from my newly acquired love for all things sugary sweet, it got me excited about being in the kitchen again. Trying new recipes and exploring flavor is my biggest passion and I had been living day to day without doing something that fully nourished and provoked that passion for too long. Big thanks to Bon Appétit and Sara Dickerman for the unwavering support and inspiration this month. I couldn't have done it without you!
